Our Plea
The plea of the Rogers City church of Christ is to restore the apostolic church, which simply means a complete return to the original ground of the New Testament church, and taking up things just as the apostles left them. Such an appeal involves going back beyond all human creeds, councils, synods, and ecclesiastical authorities to Christ and the inspired apostles, and restoring all things wherein there has been an apostasy.
This plea is not to reform some church or "the church." The original church of Christ needs no reformation. Neither does the plea mean the establishment of another church or some new church. What the world needs is the apostolic church, the original church of Christ in all of its primitive faith, worship and practice!
Our History
The church of Christ was founded almost 2000 years ago (Matthew 16:13-18; Acts 2:47). An inspired man by the name of Luke tells us that "...those who had received his word were baptized; and there were added that day about three thousand souls" (Acts 2:41). In the same chapter it is declared that "the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved" (vs. 47).
- These members met "on the first day of the week" to break bread (Acts 20:7), to "lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper" (I Corinthians 16:2) and to continue "steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers" (Acts 2:42).
- Those "churches of Christ" were ONE. They were undenominational, being neither Protestant or Catholic. The members were "one body" and were called "Christians" (Ephesians 1:22-23; 4:4; 1 Corinthians 12:12; Acts 11:26; I Peter 4:16). This the Rogers City church of Christ strives to achieve today.
The Bible
We recognize the Word of God only as the standard of authority in matters religious. We believe the New Testament alone should be our CREED and guide in matters of worship, teaching and practice. The Hebrews writer reminds us that it is "by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." (Hebrews 10:10). The word "will" also means testament. The New Testament is Jesus' will, covenant, or testament (cf. Matthew 26:28).
- All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.. -- 2 Timothy 3:16-17
- ...as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue. --2 Peter 1:3
- ...and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. -- John 8:32
- ...Your (God's) word is truth. -- John 17:17
- Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever. --I Peter 1:22-23
God's Plan
Salvation is obtained only through Christ
- ...knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. --I Peter 1:18-19
Man must obey to be saved
- And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him... --Hebrews 5:9
Man must believe
- But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. --Hebrews 11:6
- ...but he who does not believe will be condemned. --Mark 16:16
Man must repent
- Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent. --Acts 17:30
- The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us,[a] not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. --2 Peter 3:9
Man must confess
- Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. --Matthew 10:32
- ...For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. --Romans 10:10
Man must be baptized
- He who believes and is baptized will be saved... --Mark 16:16
- Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life? --Romans 6:3-4
- For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. -- 1 Corinthians 12:13-14
- . . . buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. (Colossians 2:12).
- And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. (Acts 22:16)
